The Product

When I bought this unit last Dec 2, 2012 , I was informed that this was not formally launched yet so I checked with http://www.oplususa.com and found out that it was not part of their model list yet, makes you wonder. Anyway, this prompted me to make this little review for those who’s interested in purchasing this unit.

THE LOOK

The O plus 8.5  has a 4-inch WVGA 800X480 Capacitive touch screen. It has the power button and the 3.5 mm headphone  jack at the top, the volume rocker on the left side, and the micro USB port on the right side.

It’s a very sleek looking phone and also very light. It’s back plate has an elegant black rubber finish that helps you get a grip while making you look good. It has the O+ Logo at the top and  a scribbled note at the bottom which says “Designed for O+ in the USA”. Yes, its designed in the US but the saleslady said that its assembled in China. That’s fine, most of our expensive phones today are made there.

SOFTWARE

The O plus 8.5 runs on Android Ice Cream Sandwich (ver 4.0.4). With its 1 GHz Processor, you can navigate easily and lag free.  Google Play is pre-installed on this device, thus downloading a multitude of apps is one finger away, just log in with your gmail account and your good to go. The O+ 8.5 worked flawlessly with facebook, twitter and Skype. The same goes for some 3d games like Temple Run and Frontline Commando. I had no problems using WIFI but the mobile network(Globe) had a problem activating my Internet since it’s a New model so “my phone is not compatible to receive internet settings”. Updates to follow after I inquire with Globe.

The air shuffle was very entertaining. You can switch songs or pictures with just a wave of your hand, but not so useful in taking pictures though.

CAMERA

Sample pictures

O plus 8.5 has 5 megapixel camera at the back and VGA camera at the front. Pictures look very clear and crisp. It takes decent pictures in low light, of course with the help of the flash.

BATTERY & BENCHMARK

As for its battery, considering a play a lot of  games and social apps the phone can only last up to a day.I guess that’s how long a 1500mAh Li-ion Battery can deliver. However, if you can download a battery saving app, you can use the phone up to 2 days.

MY RECOMMENDATION

Comparing with most phones that has almost the same specs, the O plus 8.5 wins the Prize for functionality and affordability. The brand is new though so you wont find it anywhere, which makes it a plus because it makes your phone even more unique.

If you are thinking of your very first Android phone, I recommend the O plus 8.5.
